with our Sherpa host in Nagarkot the sign says"the end of the universe" In Varanasi Trish and I said goodbye to our tour mates before we flew to Nepal to do our own thing. We were looking forward to the mountains and the peace we hoped to find there. From the moment we landed in Katmandu we felt at ease, we stayed in a hotel in the centre of town with a rooftop garden and Danish pastries on the menu! A walk down the main street took us 5 hours, checking out the yak wool garments, the eating places, a German bakery and an Italian pizza shop {I could eat again} Lots of Tibetan refugees, selling exquisite silver jewellery and not a beggar in sight. We spent 3 days in Katmandu, burned incense at the temple, sat on the steps of Burdar square to watch the world go by, we even went to the newly opened Casino. On the 4th day we hired a car and driver to take us up to Nagarkot, 8000 feet up in the LangTan Ranges to watch the sun set and rise over Mt. Everest We spent the night in a Sherpa hut built alongside a sheer cliff. It was bitterly cold and I was suffering from altitude sickness, that was the second time on the trip that I thought I was going to die! After the freezing temperatures in the mountains we were looking forward to the warm climate of Pokhara, in the Nepal Valley. |
