In August 1960 we married in Christchurch, New Zealand and made our way by ship to Australia, taking with us our 1925 Rugby
Vintage Car
[American} We had planned to spend our honeymoon driving across Australia in the Rugby, which turned into a 10 week honeymoon.
When the ship berthed in Sydney we saw reporters and camera men coming up the gangplank. I said "we must have celebrities
on board"- it turned out to be us! we were news!! I couldn't believe it, right across Australia the newspapers followed our
trip.
The Rugby is 6foot 6inches high and a bed was made on top of the seats so we could sleep in the car when we didn't stay
with friends.
Sometimes we drove on into the night and stopped in the dark, hoping we had picked a deserted spot so we could dress easily
outside the car in the morning. One morning we found that we had parked outside a cemetery - thank goodness the ghosts stayed
home that night.
Another morning was a bit of a buzz to find cows with their big brown eyes right up close.
Showers were at a premium, sometimes we had to climb over locked doors to get one and once we had to cross a flooded playing
field to get to the facilities but we had a wonderful time.
It was a great honeymoon, nothing went wrong with the Rugby except the beaded wheel tyres blew out in the heat in Port
Pirie in South Australia and we had to wait for replacements from Adelaide.
The car can still be seen at the York Motor Museum...........Lois
