When I look back I remember the days of WW2 in England where I was born.

All the young men had been called up to fight for their country and the young women had to take their place in the home and at work. I chose to join the Women's Land Army and it was a hard life for us girls. My first job was on a farm where the land had to be hoed by hand to get it ready to plant the seeds. There was also the job of delivering bottled milk by horse and cart to people's doorstep in the early hours of the morning. Cleaning out the cowshed was a dirty job, I never forget the first time I saw a bull mate with a cow, I was horrified!

My time with the WLA lasted one year, after that I joined the Civil Nursing Reserve and worked in a Millitary Hospital caring for sick and wounded soldiers.I saw many terrible sights but it was rewarding to know that I was doing my bit...............Joan
